The biggest offseason acquisition for the Pittsburgh Pirates has finally joined the active roster, as first baseman Spencer Horwitz was reinstated from the injured list after ending his rehabilitation assignment.

To make room on the roster, the Pirates optioned first baseman/outfielder Matt Gorski to Indianapolis. Gorski batted .195 (8 for 41) with a triple, two homers and four RBIs in 15 games with the Pirates.

The Pirates traded for Horwitz in December, sending right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz and two pitching prospects to the Cleveland Guardians, but his debut was delayed by surgery on his right wrist a week before the start of spring training.

Horwitz batted .255 (12 for 47) with three doubles, a home run, two RBIs and seven runs in 13 games, split between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis. He joined the Pirates on Friday in Philadelphia and was activated in time for Saturday’s game against the Phillies.

The 27-year-old Horwitz, a left-handed hitter, batted .264/.355/.428 with 21 doubles, 13 homers and 47 RBIs in 112 games over two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays before being dealt to Cleveland.
