With a nod to the franchise’s founding almost a century ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers revealed the design of a new throwback uniform the team will wear for an October game this coming season.
The Steelers released photos and details about the uniforms Monday via social media and on their website. The team will wear the new/old threads for the “Sunday Night Football” game against the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 26 at Acrisure Stadium.

“Founded in 1933, the Pittsburgh Steelers ignited a legacy that would come to define grit, resilience and the soul of Steel City football,” read the introduction to the unveiling on the Steelers’ website. “Steeped in heritage, this uniform celebrates both the origins of the city and Steelers football.”
The uniform is mostly a tribute to the franchise’s 1933 founding with some design elements from several decades later:
• A matte gold helmet with a gray facemask drew inspiration from the 1930s and ’60s.
• Black vertical striping is a nod to the team’s original uniform.
• The official crest for the city of Pittsburgh, which adorned jerseys during the ’30s.
• Block numbers, a staple of the Steelers until the late ’90s.
• Khaki pants meant to replicate the ones worn during the Steelers’ first season in 1933 — modernized, of course.

“We’re excited to unveil our new throwback uniforms which not only pay tribute to the origins of the Steelers franchise but also to the deep connection we have to our hometown of Pittsburgh,” Rooney said in a statement Monday. “It’s especially fitting that we’ll debut these uniforms … when we play the Green Bay Packers — another franchise in the league with a long and rich history.”

The Steelers in recent years have worn 1970s-era throwbacks, similar to their current uniforms but with a major distinction coming in the block numbers.
The Steelers wore 1933-era jerseys in recognition of the NFL’s 75th anniversary in 1994, but these are an updated version. The franchise wore what became known as the “bumblebee” throwbacks on a handful of occasions during the 2010s. Though neither one of those is remembered all that fondly by fans, a small sample of players who spoke to the team’s website seem to be giving these newest throwbacks more positive reviews.
“The first time I saw it, my jaw dropped because we haven’t worn a jersey like that in a while as a team,” linebacker Alex Highsmith said. “It’s all so cool. I would say the helmet is my favorite part of it. That yellow matte helmet is just sick. I think it’s a cool new look.
“And then with the jersey, I love that. I am just really excited to wear it.”
Tight end Pat Freiermuth called the helmets “sweet.”
“It’s something cool to showcase,” he said. “After we wear them, I want to keep that helmet forever. It’s super cool.”
The NFL in 2022 lifted its ban on alternate helmets, opening up more opportunities for designs. Throwback uniforms have increasingly become the norm for multiple games for each team during a given season.
The Steelers are also expected to also wear their “color rush” uniform for a game this season. Rooney II previously said that would happen for the Dec. 15 Monday night home game against the Miami Dolphins.
The Steelers report to training camp at Saint Vincent College on Wednesday, with the first practice on the Unity campus scheduled for Thursday. They open the preseason Aug. 9 in advance of the regular-season opener Sept. 7 at the New York Jets.
