The Pittsburgh Pirates shook up their bullpen a day after it blew a nine-run lead against baseball worst team.
The Pirates recalled right-handed reliever Dauri Moreta from Triple-A Indianapolis before Saturday’s game against the Colorado Rockies, marking his return to the major leagues after recovering from Tommy John surgery.
To make room on the active roster, the Pirates optioned rookie right-hander Thomas Harrington, who allowed six earned runs on seven hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning in Friday’s 17-16 loss.
The 29-year-old Moreta went 3-0 with a 2.56 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 48 strikeouts against 19 walks and a .191 batting average against in 31 appearances this season with Indianapolis.
Moreta began the 2025 season on the 60-day injured list while recovering from UCL surgery on his right elbow surgery. He was reinstated and optioned to Triple-A on June 15.
His next game will be his first with the Pirates since Oct. 1, 2023, in Pittsburgh’s season finale against Miami. Moreta went 5-2 with a 3.72 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 119 strikeouts against 38 walks in 100 innings over 94 appearances in 2023.
