Editor’s note: PennDOT announced Wednesday, Aug. 20 that this scheduled closure has been postponed. A new date has not yet been determined.
PennDOT has postponed a planned weekend closure of the 62nd Street Bridge in Etna and Pittsburgh.
The closure was scheduled to run from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, weather permitting, so crews can repair concrete, install mast arm foundations and repair overhead signs.
A new date for the closure has not been decided.
When closed, southbound traffic will be detoured. The posted detour will be:
• From southbound Route 8, take the ramp to Kittanning Street in Etna;
• Turn right onto Kittanning Street;
• Turn left onto Butler Street;
• Turn left onto Freeport Road;
• Turn right onto Bridge Street;
• Turn right onto the ramp to South 28 toward Pittsburgh
• From southbound Route 28, take the left-hand ramp to the 40th Street Bridge/Lawrenceville, exit 3A;
• Cross the 40th Street Bridge;
• Turn left onto Butler Street;
• Follow Butler Street back to the 62nd Street Bridge.
Traffic in the northbound direction will not be impacted.
Another weekend closure of the 62nd Street Bridge in the southbound direction is scheduled for Sept. 5-8. The first northbound closure of the bridge is planned for Sept. 12-15.
Despite the cancellation of this weekend’s closure, PennDOT anticipates all three weekend closures happening in September, a spokeswoman said.
The work is part of a $9.14 million project in Pittsburgh, Etna and Shaler that started in August 2024. It is expected to be finished late this year.
