Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Joel Blomqvist will be sidelined a minimum of four weeks because of an undisclosed injury.

His status was announced via one of the team’s social media accounts Friday morning.

It isn’t clear when or how Blomqvist was injured. He reported to the team’s facility Wednesday and was not feeling completely healthy, according to coach Dan Muse. The team initially labeled Blomqvist as “day to day.”

Blomqvist’s lone game this preseason came in a 2-1 road shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Monday. He stopped all 11 shots he faced in 30:05 of ice time. As planned, he was replaced midway through regulation by Sergei Murashov.

Last season, Blomqvist made his NHL debut, appearing in 15 games and posting a 4-9-1 record, a 3.81 goals against average and an .885 save percentage.

In April, Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas declared an open competition for the goaltending position for the 2025-26 season and reiterated that stance when training camp opened Sept. 18.

Blomqvist, an All-Star at the American Hockey League level in 2023-24, was one of five goaltenders vying for the two spots in net on the NHL club along with Tristan Jarry, Filip Larsson, Murashov and Arturs Silovs.
