Visitors to the Latrobe 30 Shoppes plaza in Unity will have an opportunity Saturday to learn about fire prevention while meeting local first responders and checking out their emergency vehicles.
The Unity Township Bureau of Fire is hosting a Safety Saturday event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking area near the Harbor Freight store.
All seven township fire departments will be represented, with a display of about a dozen fire trucks, according to Tom Schultheis, township emergency management coordinator.
Derry Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 from Bradenville also will be present, along with Mutual Aid Ambulance Service.
State police will offer car seat safety checks and local firefighters will have smoke detectors to distribute, while supplies last, Schultheis said.
Other participants will include Latrobe Police Department’s drone division and former Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner and current coroner candidate John Ackerman, who will bring a dog trained to detect human remains.
“There will be booths set up where we’ll give coloring books, crayons and plastic fire helmets to the kids,” Schultheis said.
