Sharpsburg’s Guyasuta Square was packed with people anxiously awaiting the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus.
The iconic North Pole couple arrived via horse and carriage at the Allegheny County borough for its tree lighting celebration on Nov. 22.
Organizers estimate at least 300 people participated in the holiday kickoff, which also featured live performances, vendors and various activities along North Canal Street and part of Main Street.
The event was made possible in partnership with the borough and its parks and recreation commission.
“I think it went well,” said Mallory Helbling, parks and recreation commission president. “We received a ton of positive feedback both during and after the event. Things such as, ‘it was a great event, can’t wait until next year,’ etc. We got really lucky with the weather, but good weather meant it was also easier for people to travel elsewhere, so we are thankful they stayed in Sharpsburg or came to Sharpsburg.
Visitors came from O’Hara, Shaler, Monroeville, Irwin and other communities.
“It was a nice mix of all ages,” Helbling said. “I went back and forth down Main Street after the event and the local businesses looked packed — some of us enjoyed them as well after and they were crowded, so even more people throughout town.”
Highlights included face painting, snowball fights, fire trucks, making reindeer food, creating ornaments with Sharpsburg Community Library staff and fire dancers from Art in Motion.
“The tree lighting was a wonderful event organized by our parks and recreation,” Councilman Roman Mason said. “It was great to see so many members of the community come together to celebrate the start of the holiday season.”
Mayor Kayla Portis echoed those comments.
“(The event) is more than a celebration of the season,” Portis said. “It’s a celebration of our community. It brings neighbors together, supports our local businesses, and reminds us of the unity, hope, and warmth that makes Sharpsburg such a special place to call home.”
Commissioners at the tree lighting also spread the word about their holiday house decorating contest.
Judging will take place from Dec. 22-29.
Participants are encouraged to decorate for any and all winter season holidays.
Prizes include $50 gift card for third place, $75 gift card for second and a $100 gift card for first.
