Preliminary results of police regionalization study to be released

Initial results of the Lower Valley police regionalization study will be released this week.
Members of local government will meet Tuesday to hear preliminary findings of a state-conducted study on police mergers. The meeting is for participants only.
Ron Stern, a retired police officer who works for the state Department of Community and Economic Development, conducted the study and is scheduled to present benefits and drawbacks of a possible merger.
Aspinwall, Blawnox, O’Hara and Sharpsburg agreed to the study but none have voted to move forward with regionalization.
“We will discuss details of the presentation at our February meeting,” Aspinwall Councilman David Brown said.
Stern is a government policy specialist with the Governor’s Center for Local Government Services. The study was free to municipalities and took several months to complete.
Some Aspinwall council members said they hope the study provides a glimpse at ways to improve department efficiency. Policies, functions and costs were the focus.
