Fox Chapel Area school officials are rolling out a plan to students to submit tips that could potentially thwart school violence.
Safe2Say Something is a new statewide youth reporting system through which students can report incidents without giving their name or phone number.
“We want parents and guardians to know that the district has a plan in place for the use and implementation of Safe2Say,” said Bonnie Berzonski, coordinator of communications.
The program is mandated under PA state law and teaches students in grades five to 12 how to recognize warning signs of people who could be a threat to themselves or others. It has a particular focus on social media.
If students see something that makes them uncomfortable, that’s a reason to submit a tip. School officials will determine how to proceed.
According to the website, 1 million students have reported being harassed or threatened, 80 percent of school shooters told someone of their violent plans and 70 percent of people who commit suicide told someone of their intentions.
Through the anonymous tip line, people can report incidents 24 hours a day through website, app, or by phone at 1-844-723-2729.
A crisis center reviews and assesses the reports, and then sends them to school administration or law enforcement.
In addition to Safe2Say, the district has its own phone tip line and website reporting system. The phone number is 412-696-1420. It is also available at fcasd.edu.
