Indie rock/pop singer Buffchick is still riding the highs of releasing her debut album last year.

Performing as Buffchick, New Jersey-born Erin Manion dropped her “showtime” album on Oct. 25.

“The writing/recording process of the album was one of the most significant experiences of my entire life,” she said. “I was going through a very dark period and was lucky enough to be able to express my truest and deepest feelings in an extremely honest and cathartic way.

“Recording the album in Vermont with my band (who also consists of some of my closest friends) was the most beautiful experience. I felt so supported and understood while sharing the songs for the first time with them, and then we got to create some really sick songs about those feelings. It was magical .”

Buffchick, who cited Pinegrove, Modern Baseball, Indigo De Souza and The Beths as influences, said she was excited to make her Pittsburgh debut on Feb. 28 at Mr. Smalls Funhouse in Millvale, alongside singer/songwriter Brye.

In an email interview, she discussed her two latest singles, how they work together and the origin of her stage name:

What was the inspiration for your single, “Anything You Do”?

It is the first song I’ve written from the perspective of someone else. I wanted to write a song from the POV of a friend of mine who was going through a gnarly breakup. I feel like I lowkey was projecting some of my own feelings about past relationships as well, because I don’t know how else I would have been able to tap into some of those heavy emotions. But all of the little details mentioned in the song are attributed to my friend’s experience. It was definitely a turning point in my writing journey.

How different is it to write a song from someone else’s perspective compared to your own?

Weirdly, it was so much easier for me. I think I was just able to dig deep into my subconscious and pretend like I don’t have some of the exact same emotions that my friend did. I remember I was so excited after I finished it to share it with my friend. It was definitely a way for me to be able to share with them that I saw them and understood them.

How does your newest single “Never Disappear” fit together with “Anything You Do”?

The two of them are unique forms of love songs, portrayed in really different ways. “Never Disappear” started out as a proper love song but quickly turned into an eerie representation of someone who is far too attached to their partner during their relationship. “Anything You Do” is about someone who is far too attached after the relationship is long over.

What are your musical goals for 2025?

I want to collaborate as much as possible!

How did you come up with Buffchick as your performing name? Are people assuming you’re from Buffalo or really into lifting weights?

Everyone always assumes exactly those things. It’s sooo funny because I have zero lifting ability and am from New Jersey. I love buffalo chicken so much though.
