Pittsburgh area local band spotlight: Six Gun Sally
In mid-March, the Southern rock band Six Gun Sally will release their new album, “Stand Up” — featuring a mix of originals and covers like Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Second Hand News.”
“It’s Six Gun Sally to the ‘T’ —a mix of classic rock, Southern rock and rockin’ country with vampy up-tempos, driving drums and rockin’ twangy guitar,” drummer Dave Barbe said. “Aimee’s vocals are silk and honey smooth with a kick, and Allen’s lead vocals are downright hillbilly.”
Over the years, Six Gun Sally has shared the stage with some of their influences.
“There’s been a lot of surreal moments,” Barbe said. “Sharing the stage with Henry Paul (Blackhawk/Outlaws), Artimus Pyle (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Carmine Appice; recording with Bo Bice. Sitting on the bus with these guys (our musical heroes) and swapping stories. They’ve all made us feel like one of them. We’ve become friends. It’s a cool thing.”
Barbe filled TribLive in on what else we should know about Six Gun Sally:
Band: Six Gun Sally
Band members: Aimee Jane Williams (lead vocals), Allen Granus (lead guitar), Jeff Yeckel (lead and rhythm guitar), Dan Rach (keys), Stan Brusoski (bass), Billy G (percussion) and Dave Barbe (drums)
Founding story: We formed the band years ago, in 1992. There were six of us (all guys). We all played locally, some as part-timers, some professionally. I went to high school with Dan Rach, our keyboard player. We all gravitated toward (Lynyrd) Skynryd, the (Rolling) Stones and Allman Brothers, and that’s the kind of music we wanted to write, record and perform. We wanted the band name to be “Six Gun something.” A few more drinks into tossing names around (that sucked), a band member said “Six Gun Sally” and it stuck — without a gal in the band! It was almost three years later that we added a female lead singer.
