Latrobe’s Cabaret Theatre postpones ‘Cotton Patch Gospel’ run

The Latrobe-based Cabaret Theatre has postponed its upcoming production of Harry Chapin’s “Cotton Patch Gospel.”
Originally scheduled to open July 10 and run through July 20, the production has been rescheduled for Oct. 16-26 in the Olde Main Theatre in Latrobe.
Artistic Director John Carosella cited “production difficulties” for the change.
“There are always production difficulties of one sort or another and most of them we handle, but this was a major one,” Carosella says. “It’s very difficult to produce a musical without a music director, and this show calls for very specific bluegrass-type music.
“If we can’t do a production well, we don’t do it, and getting the best music director and musicians possible will enable us to do this little gem of a show as well as we want to do it,” he adds.
“The musical is a re-telling of the Gospel of Matthew as it might have been told if the story had unfolded in the deep South — Gainesville, Ga., to be exact,” Carosella says. “Harry died in an automobile accident (in 1981) shortly after he completed work on the show and it was produced in New York after his death.”
