Prime Stage presents ‘Twelfth Night’ as season-ending production

Prime Stage Theatre will complete its 23rd consecutive season on a humorous note with William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, “Twelfth Night.”

The show runs May 4-12 in the New Hazlett Theater Center for the Performing Arts on Pittsburgh’s North Side. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays.

Set in the colorful world of Portugal and enhanced by traditional Portuguese fado music, “Twelfth Night” follows Viola as she disguises herself as a page boy to find her twin brother, but finds herself at the center of a love triangle, Prime Stage says.

The oft-quoted line, “If music be the food of love, play on,” comes from the play.

Carolyn Jerz, 17, of Greensburg, a three-time winner of Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Shakespeare Monologue Contest, plays Viola. The show is directed by veteran actor, director and Shakespeare coach Andy Kirtland, co-founder and managing director of New Renaissance Theatre Company and Unrehearsed Shakespeare Company, both based in Pittsburgh.

Prime Stage will offer an audio description of the 8 p.m. May 10 show, a sensory-friendly performance at 1 p.m. May 11 and sign language interpretation during the 8 p.m. May 11 show.

Pittsburgh-based Prime Stage Theatre presents professionally produced plays based on works of classic and contemporary works of literature.
