Greengate Walmart gets pickup tower for online orders

Picking up online orders from the Greengate Walmart Supercenter just got a little easier.
The store, located at 2200 Greengate Center Circle in Hempfield, installed a pickup tower on Friday, allowing customers to pick up online orders near the entrance instead of the back of the store. It is the sixth pickup tower in the Pittsburgh area.
To use the tower, online customers must choose the “pickup” option at checkout. When the item arrives at the Walmart store, an employee loads the item into the tower, and a bar code is sent to the customer’s smartphone.
Upon arriving at the store, customers scan the bar code to receive their order. From the time customers scan their bar code to the time they receive their order, the entire transaction is complete in a minute or less, according to Walmart.
The number of items and their size ultimately determine how many items the pickup tower can hold. On average, the tower can hold about 300 items, ranging up to the size of a medium-sized microwave.
The Greengate store also plans to institute curbside grocery pickup service on Aug. 20.
