Why is Facebook chirping at you? Apparently, it’s not supposed to. And you’re not imagining it.
Some Facebook users have been complaining about a new chirping sound that occurs when scrolling through the cellphone app. Turns out it’s just a glitch.
Andy Stone, Meta’s communications director, confirmed via the X social media platform that the chirping noise is a mistake.
“It’s an unfortunate technical error that we’re in the process of fixing,” Stone said.
Hearing a chirping noise while scrolling through your Facebook Feed on your iPhone? It’s not you, it’s us! And it’s an unfortunate technical error that we're in the process of fixing.— Andy Stone (@andymstone) February 13, 2024
Dataconomy originally reported that the sound was part of a new update meant to make newsfeed scrolling “more engaging and interesting.” That report appears to be incorrect.
How can it be stopped in the meantime? There are a few easy steps, according to Facebook’s Help Center.
Open the Facebook menu. Under Settings and Privacy, click the Settings button. Click the Media button under Preferences. Under Sounds, toggle the In-App Sound to off. This sequence will stop the chirping, but it will also stop the noises that are heard when pressing the Like, Comment and Share buttons, USA TODAY said.
