Today on the TribLive Taste Test, we travel all the way to the Philippines for a taste of something called spicy sampaloc candy.

What is it? Find out with us!

Just in case it turns out to be horrible, Taste Test squad member Patrick Varine also brought along some “lemon fudge” made using a recipe from Manor resident Joanne Niehl’s recent cookbook, “Pittsburgh on Your Plate.”

As it turns out, the base for sampaloc is the tamarind, a tropical fruit native to Africa that is a blend of sweet and sour, with an interesting little surprise or two on the inside.
