Home gardeners who are looking forward to adding new plants to their flower beds might consider some of the native varieties being offered by the Ligonier Valley Historical Society.

The Laughlintown-based society’s native plant sale is being held in partnership with nearby Penguin Court, a preserve of the Brandywine Conservancy.

In response to the coronavirus pandemic and the need for social distancing, event organizers have shifted gears. Instead of a traditional sale, with patrons browsing among the plants, the sale will be conducted through pre-orders only.

Orders will be taken until May 4. To maintain a safe distance between customers, each will make an appointment to pick up ordered plants at the society’s Compass Inn Museum, either on May 9 or May 10.

The sale features a baker’s dozen of decorative native plants, including varieties that attract pollinators. The selection includes columbine, butterfly weed, common milkweed, swamp milkweed, cardinal flower, great blue lobelia, common mountain mint, oxeye sunflower, wild senna, aromatic aster, showy aster, purple coneflower and wild bergamot — also known as bee balm.

The cost is $5.50 for each 4-inch potted plant. Quantities are limited.
