Horticulturist Denise Schreiber says she “tells it like it is” when she talks about the science of growing things — especially when it comes to debunking old wives’ tales that are often accepted as gardening gospel.
Expect to hear the facts and nothing but the facts when Schreiber presents “Urban Myths and Legends in the Garden” at the inaugural Seven Springs Home & Garden Show.
The show, set for April 26-28 at the sprawling recreational complex near Champion, will feature exhibits, displays and presentations designed to get all kinds of indoor and outdoor summer projects off to a good start.
Schreiber will speak at 1 p.m. April 27. The Pleasant Hills resident retired last year after 27 years as a greenhouse grower and horticulturist with the Allegheny County Parks Department.
Planting by the moon
“I’ll talk about the types of things you see in the ‘Farmers’ Almanac,’ ” she says.
While there’s value to information gleaned from experience and passed down through the generations, such information doesn’t always hold up to scientific scrutiny, she says.
As an example, she cites (tongue-in-cheek) recommendations such as “planting by the moon, the sun or the stars, or dancing around the fire naked” to guarantee a good garden harvest.
“Those things won’t have any effect on your garden,” she says. It’s the condition of the soil, having good seed, proper watering, the weather and other factors that count.
Schreiber says she’ll also address issues surrounding use of the broad-spectrum herbicide, RoundUp, which has been in the news lately due to a recent lawsuit in which a jury awarded a California man $80 million on his claims that years of using the Monsanto product were a substantial cause of his cancer.
The talk will cover responsible use of such products and the reasons why so-called organic herbicides and pesticides should also be approached with caution.
The show also will include talks on other trending topics, such as “Big Ideas for Small Spaces,” by Gabe Hays; and “Plants for Pollinators,” by Martha Swiss.
Also present will be more than 60 exhibitors, including Pella Windows and Doors, South Ridge Farm and Nature’s Granite.
Lots to see and do
The home and garden show was created in hopes that it would become a signature spring event for the resort, appealing in particular to resort homeowners, says Kristin Rivers, Seven Springs events manager.
“We’re very excited to bring this new spring event to the mountains,” Rivers says. “Attendees can get everything they need to get their home projects off to a great start, and the resort amenities available during the show will ensure a fantastic experience for everyone in the family.”
When not exploring the show, attendees can explore the resort’s amenities, including the Seven Springs Golf Course, Trillium Spa, sporting clays facility, various lounges and restaurants and other fun and recreational offerings.
The resort also will be hosting its 18th annual Brewski Festival during the weekend. Featuring more than 100 beers from more than 50 breweries, the festival will take place Friday and Saturday nights in the Foggy Goggle.
Tickets for the Brewski Festival can be purchased online at 7springs.com.
Hours for the Seven Springs Home & Garden Show will be 4-9 p.m. April 26 and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. April 27-28. A $5 admission includes a $5 coupon for Slopeside Restaurant.
