Trib garden columnists win national awards for their work
Tribune-Review garden columnists Doug Oster and Jessica Walliser have again received recognition for their work from a national gardening communications organization.
The pair received a Silver Award for co-hosting “The Organic Gardeners” radio show in the 2019 GardenComm Media Awards, presented by Garden Communicators International.
Editor of Everybody Gardens, Oster also received a Silver Award from the organization for Best Newsletter, for the Everybody Gardens’ “Seed of the Month Club” publication.
“It’s a group effort which includes all the gardeners who read and participate in the newsletter,” Oster says. “We have a great team that works on the publication, and I’m very proud that the SOM newsletter has won for the second consecutive year. We all work hard on it, but have a lot of fun too.”
The newsletter was one of 160 entries judged by a panel of distinguished members of the gardening, communications and academic communities, Oster says.
Walliser’s website, savvygardening.com, also won a Silver Award for Digital Media: Blog, Overall Website.
“I own the Savvy Gardening website with two other garden writers, Niki Jabbour from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Tara Nolan, from Toronto, Canada,” horticulturist Walliser says. “The website was started in 2014 and offers gardeners advice on all things gardening, from vegetables and flowers to pest management and eco-friendly gardening techniques.”
The medals are awarded in more than 60 categories. Silver medal winners are entered for judging in the gold medal round, with those honorees to be announced at the GardenComm Annual Conference & Expo, Sept. 4-7 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
