Out & About: Diners flock to summer’s first SupperMarket

Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, “Into each life some rain must fall.” Especially, it seems, if you live in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Well, it fell June 5, delaying opening day for the Lincoln Highway SupperMarket at the Lincoln Highway Experience museum in Unity.

June 12 was a better day, and a good crowd came out to pick up some supper at the weekly summer food fest.

The aroma of good eats wafted over the picnic area, as did acoustic dinner music from Tim Roberts and Stacey Meyers.

Food servers on hand included Aroma Italiano, Catering Creations, Chef Dato’s Table, Connections Cafe, Out of the Fire Cafe and Sun Dawg Cafe.

Welcoming friends old and new was Olga Herbert, executive director of the nonprofit Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor that operates the transportation-themed museum.

As for the food, Debbie Bulaba (dining with hubby Joe Bulaba) said, “Nothing has disappointed us so far.”

Improvements to this year’s market include a safe drop-off area for attendees with mobility issues, a reconfigured parking area and new, heavy-duty picnic tables, including a junior-size table made for kids.

The markets are scheduled for 5-8 p.m. Wednesdays through August, as weather allows. If the weather looks iffy, a cancellation notice is posted by 11:30 a.m. on SupperMarket day at lincolnhighwaysupper market.org or lhhc.org.

Seen at supper: Joe and Jenny Waggle, Steve and Becky Kittey, Don and Judy McMahon, Bob and Jan Monteparte, Bill and Christy Stephen, Denise Lakin, Tony Banks, Joe and Teresa Melago, Angela O’Brien, Rosine Dull, Cheryl Wood and a homeowners group from Hidden Valley Resort, who toured the museum and then stayed to eat.
