Greensburg artist Brian McCall was hard at work on Aug. 4, installing his new addition to the Greensburg Art Center’s sculpture garden, when he was asked for the name of the piece — a tall rectangular column with ants, grasshoppers and beetles climbing the sides and a bee perched on top.
“That’s a good question,” he said. “I hadn’t even thought about a name.”
It’s an obelisk and it’s covered with bugs, said his helper, Bruce Adams. So what about “Bug-elisk”?
“‘Bug-elisk’ it is,” McCall replied, noting that the bee will rotate when the wind blows.
The installation took place during an afternoon Garden Sculpture Party, during which attendees ate ice cream and listened to music while McCall and Adams labored. They also could pop inside the center to view more of McCall’s work in “Shadows of a Cloudy Mind,” on display through Aug. 23. Kids were offered a bug-themed art project.
Center President Susan Kiren said the new sculpture will be displayed for a year as an anchor piece for the garden, planned to be an incubator space for emerging artists, who can submit proposals for pieces to go in next year. The program is made possible by a grant from the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance, through re-grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
