Historically, being called yellow hasn’t been a good thing. But yellow was exactly what you wanted to be at Latrobe Art Center’s seventh annual Yellow Tie Gala.

The event was held Aug. 23 in conjunction with the Great American Banana Split Celebration, commemorating Latrobe as the birthplace of the decadent ice cream treat.

If it was yellow, someone was wearing it, from shoes and socks, to shirts and dresses, to scarves and jewelry, and — you guessed it — ties.

One block of Ligonier Street in front of the center became a pop-up nightclub. Vases of cheerful sunflowers decorated tables at one end, while the other end served as a dance floor and stage for the big band sound of Neon Swing X-perience.

Attendees not confident in their swing dancing skills had the opportunity — new this year — to take a pre-gala swing dance lesson from Jerry and Judy Gresko, owners of TDI Ballroom Dance Studio in Greensburg.

Along with a sumptuous hot-and-cold appetizer bar from Ricolita’s Cafe, guests were treated to an open bar with signature banana split daiquiri and — of course — a banana split bar courtesy of Latrobe Dairy Queen. Marty Singer donned his retro soda jerk duds to ferry the treats to the tables.

Event organizers included center Executive Director Lauren Buches, Assistant Director Joe Bellack and volunteer Linda Miller.

Seen: Melissa Blystone, Alex Blystone, Briana Tomack, Bill Koker, Sean Gallagher and Sherrie Dunlap Gallagher, Matt and Jamie Coates, Vince and Sue Hrubes, David and Janet Seremet, Anita Manoli, Richard and Joanna Stillwagon, Tim and Diana Rennie, Don and Joanie Orlando, Bill and Rosemary Garrity, Bob and Arlene Kendra, Dave and Johnette Delisi, Larry Fannie and Latrobe Mayor Rosie Wolford.
