On the run-up to the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival, there was something approximating a Dogstock on Aug. 11 at the Twin Lakes Park Expansion Area in Hempfield.

It was the inaugural Westmoreland County Dog Days of Summer, a one-stop shopping event for information on area pet adoption agencies, dog product vendors and the opportunity to obtain dog licenses on-site.

Dog Days was hosted by the Westmoreland County Treasurer’s Office and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

Among organizations represented were Action for Animals Humane Society, All But Furgotten, Animal Friends of Westmoreland, Cross Your Paws Rescue, Hospaws, Humane Society of Westmoreland County, Life Saver Animal Rescue, Pet Adoption League, Pet Friends and Tiny Cause.

Dogs and their humans mingled and made friends and shopped for homemade treats, fancy collars and leashes and everything else the well-appointed pooch might need.

For the humans, there were first-come, first-served hot dogs, chips and drinks, courtesy of sponsors Petagogy, Unity Printing, Walmart and Sam’s Club.

The barkfest was conveniently located next to the enclosed grassy slope of the Franklin Dog Park, where many of the dogs went off-leash for a run and some extra fun.
