One person was taken to the hospital following a house fire in Pittsburgh’s Elliott neighborhood early Thursday morning.
Fire, police and EMS responded to the 900 block of Gibson Street shortly after 3 a.m., according to an Allegheny County emergency dispatcher. Crews found flames on the first floor of the home that spread to the second and third floors, Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokesperson Chris Togneri said.
Firefighters gained entry to the building and were able to quickly knock down the flames.
A man and woman living in the house were safely evacuated, but the man collapsed outside and went into cardiac arrest, Togneri said. EMS treated him on scene and were able to reestablish a pulse while on the way to the hospital. The man was admitted in critical condition.
The city’s fire investigation unit, made up of police and fire investigators, will work to determine the cause of the fire.
The fire, which closed Gibson Road for a period Thursday morning, did not damage any neighboring homes.
The American Red Cross will assist the family with housing.
