A man who died in Allegheny County Jail over the weekend was identified Tuesday as Douglas Bonomo, 59, of McKeesport.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet provided a cause or manner of death.

Bonomo, an inmate at the jail, was pronounced dead by paramedics around 7:20 a.m. Sunday, according to Warden Orlando Harper. He was unresponsive when a jail employee found him at 7 a.m. Staff members attempted life-saving measures until paramedics arrived.

Brentwood police charged Bonomo with theft by unlawful taking, disorderly conduct, retail theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief on Jan. 10, court records show. His non-jury trial was scheduled to begin Aug. 24.

Bonomo had been at the county jail since Jan. 11, court records show. His bail was set in January and again in March at $2,000.

Bonomo had been housed in the jail’s mental health unit after being committed April 28 to Torrance State Hospital in Derry, Harper said. He was one of 31 inmates at the jail awaiting a transfer to Torrance.

Public defender Bobby Joe Chambers Jr., who represents Bonomo, was not immediately available for comment Tuesday afternoon. Jesse Geleynse, a spokesman for the jail, declined to comment beyond the warden’s statements.
