Aquinas Academy hosts chess tournament in Hampton

Six Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh students won awards at the Aquinas Chess Invitational Tournament, held March 9 in the Rhodora J. Donahue building on the school’s campus in Hampton.

A total of 175 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, representing 25 schools, competed at six levels (K-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and 9-12).

The tournament was unrated and open to beginners. Every participant played four or five games in a Swiss-system format.

The top six students in each division took home a trophy (top three finishers) or medal (fourth- through sixth-place finishers). The following six students from Aquinas took home awards:

• 9-12 Division — Alexander Beaven, first place, and Jonah Burchill, fourth place.

• 7-8 Division — Ogden Pribich, sixth place.

• 3-4 Division — Daniel Austin, sixth place.

• K-2 Division — Jack Hannon, sixth place, and Vincent Marcenelle, sixth place.
