Authorities are searching for a dog that ran from a home in Pittsburgh’s Knoxville neighborhood after seriously injuring a 2-year-old boy Sunday afternoon.

The dog attack in the 200 block of Moore Avenue was reported just after 1:30 p.m.

According to police, homeowners called 911 after their dog, a 2-year-old gray pit bull, bit the boy inside the residence. Witnesses told officers the dog is “food aggressive.”

“According to initial reports, the child may have approached the dog’s food bowl prior to the attack,” police said in a release. “As adults intervened and attempted to pull the dog away, it escaped and ran out of the home.”

The child suffered serious facial injuries, police said. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Officers, including Animal Care & Control, searched the area but were unable to find the dog.

The dog is believed to be in the Knoxville area. Anyone who spots the dog is asked to call Animal Care & Control’s emergency line at 412-255-2935 or 911.
