Allegheny Health Network is inviting the public to submit art for the thousands of mosaic tiles that will be used to create a 7-foot-by-18-foot mural that will be installed along the corridor connecting the new AHN Wexford Hospital and the AHN Wexford Health and Wellness Pavilion in Pine Township.

Members of the public are invited to summon their artistic creativity to help adorn the new hospital Allegheny Health Network is building in Pine by submitting artwork for a mosaic mural dubbed “Caring for the Community.”

“Since announcing our plans to build a hospital in Wexford, the community has welcomed us with open arms and for that we could not be more grateful,” said Dr. Allan Klapper, president of AHN Wexford Hospital.

The 160-bed hospital is being constructed next to AHN’s Wexford Health and Wellness Pavilion along Perry Highway. It is scheduled to open next fall.

The 7-foot-by-18-foot mural will be assembled with thousands of tiles featuring visual representations of family, unity, health, hometown and other sentiments that reflect the artwork’s theme.

“No matter your age or artistic ability, we invite you to make your mark on AHN Wexford Hospital by participating in this special project,” Klapper said.

The tiles will be arranged in a pre-designed mosaic mural that will be installed in the corridor connecting the hospital and the wellness center.

Participants can submit artwork at no cost. Tiles bearing the name of a loved one or a caregiver also can be sponsored for a gift of $724 to benefit the Wexford Hospital Fund.

Art is submitted online, where participants can get additional information about the project and see their tiles in the mural when it is completed.

Pittsburgh-based Hefren-Tillotson is donating $50,000 to support the installation of the mural as a demonstration of its commitment to supporting initiatives that benefit the community.

Supporting the hospital’s project “was an easy choice because it engages our employees, families, friends and neighbors,” said Kim Tillotson Fleming, the wealth management company’s chief executive officer.

The mosaic mural is offered by Project S.N.A.P. — Share, Nurture, Act and Preserve — a national nonprofit organization that uses art and storytelling to promote its mission of “empowering people of all ages to communicate about issues that are important to them.”

AHN and its parent company, Highmark Health, announced in 2018 that it was building the new hospital in Pine and four “small format” neighborhood hospitals as part of the health-care network’s $1 billion expansion plan.

The mini-hospitals are in McCandless, Brentwood, Harmar and Hempfield.
