Five residents have died of covid-19 and 130 residents and employees have contracted the coronavirus disease at Allegheny County’s Kane Community Living Center in Scott Township, newly reported data show.

The sharp rise in infected residents follows reports that dozens of the Scott center’s residents had the virus and one resident had died as of last week.

By Wednesday afternoon, a total of 102 residents were infected, 10 of which have since recovered or been discharged, according to data reported by the county.

Eighty residents who tested positive for covid-19 were deemed to be active cases. Most of the active cases are “asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic,” according to the county.

An additional 28 employees tested positive for covid-19, 12 of which have since recovered, the county reports. Sixteen employees who tested positive remain active cases and are not working.

County officials were not immediately available to comment.

A note posted to the county website said that first positive cases were reported at Scott around Sept. 20-21.

“Once initial recent positive resident case was identified, there was enhanced testing as required by regulations and guidance,” the county’s online notice said. “Routine testing of all staff members is undertaken at least once every other week. Most residents and staff members are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic.”

The spread at the Scott center marks the second county-run senior care facility to grapple with a deadly coronavirus outbreak since March.

The virus was first reported in Kane’s Glen Hazel location March 25, when an employee tested positive. Two residents tested positive two days later. By mid-May, 16 residents had died and 76 had tested positive.

A total of 87 residents became infected at the Glen Hazel facility and 19 residents died there of covid-19, county data show. Sixty-nine have since recovered or been discharged.

All 59 employees at Glen Hazel who contracted the disease have recovered.

The county reports no active cases at the Glen Hazel, Ross or McKeesport facilities as of this week.
