A tough winter season has resulted in more than $22,000 to replace or repair gas and water lines at Carnegie Elementary School building.

A more than 60-year old gas line deteriorated beyond repair in February which resulted in students missing two days of classes. District officials still are awaiting word from the state Department of Education about whether the students will have to make up those days. Superintendent Joseph Dimperio applied to the state for an exception because of the emergency.

School board members approved a $11,859 payment to Gary Mancini Construction for work completed on the gas line replacement, and a $6,963 payment to Vegely Welding Inc. for labor, materials, equipment and replacement of a gas line. During the February board meeting, Dennis McDade, director of maintenance and custodial services, said the section of pipe from Franklin Avenue to the building’s loading dock area was beyond repair. An additional 21 feet of pipe inside the building was also replaced.

Both companies were in the area during the gas leak and were able to complete the work in time for students to return to class that following Monday.

The school building also had a water pipe freeze and break. Gary Mancini Construction repaired the water line for $3,850.
