Property owners in the Chartiers Valley School District can expect to pay more in real estate taxes next year.

The board of directors passed a proposed final budget Tuesday for the 2020-21 school year of $68 million, a 1% increase of the current budget, according to a district news release.

“Our board and the boards before us wrestle with the decision to raise taxes every year. We are a frugal and value-oriented community. This is only the seventh time in 20 years we are raising taxes,” said school board President Bob Kearney. “State and federal funding just isn’t keeping pace with the costs of education.”

The district’s proposed budget increase would mean a property tax increase of .6523 mills, bringing the millage rate to 18.2118, which equates to $65.23 per $100,000 assessment.

One mill in Chartiers Valley brings in approximately $2.25 million.

Like many school districts in the state, Chartiers Valley continues to be plagued by teacher pensions, which, according to the district, increased 626% since 2008.

The board will vote on the final budget during the regularly scheduled meeting on June 16.
