Chartiers Valley plans to establish a girls golf club team next fall.

Athletic Director Zack Hayward said the team will start as a club team for two years, and then after those two years, will be moved over as a WPIAL member team.

Hayward said there have been girls on the co-ed golf team throughout the years. Over the past year, more girls have expressed an interest in golf, he said.

Girls golf is one of the fastest growing sports in Western Pennsylvania. Last fall, eight high schools — Trinity, Plum, Latrobe, Belle Vernon, Beaver, Ellwood City, North Catholic and Sewickley Academy — launched girls golf teams.

Hayward said that to start the club team, there would be no cost to the district as the club would need to fully fund and support the team and expenses. Once the team is recognized by the WPIAL, the district would look into what the cost over the past two seasons had been, he said.

The team’s home course has not been determined. The current co-ed team plays at Nevillewood, and the JV team plays at Fort Cherry.

“Our district fully supports our students and their interest in extracurricular activities,” Hayward said. “We are excited about this new club and the opportunities it will bring to our female athletes.”
