Well, I see that our neighbors at Bishop Canevin High School are at it again. Recently, they hit the recruiting trail at Carlynton High School.

Last fall, I had the pleasure of watching Carlynton’s middle school football team play a few games. I felt that they had some good players that were going to be freshmen this fall. Then recently, one of the top players out of the blue decides to transfer to Canevin. Something obviously did not smell right and Carlynton’s administration and athletic department rightfully contested the transfer.

A hearing was held with the WPIAL in which even the parents “kind of admitted” the recruitment. The WPIAL voted to accept the transfer request by a vote of 6-5. To make matters worse, Carlynton had one of its largest crowds for a home game in a long time as they hosted Canevin on Labor Day Friday.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Canevin was winning 36-0, but that was not enough for their coaching staff. They kept their starters in the game until past the midway point of the fourth quarter. Worse yet, they continued to pass the entire fourth quarter. Not once did Canevin’s football team “take a knee.”

The final score was 50-0. I had thought that the Gardner Point System was abolished many years ago. It was also reported that in the press box that there were five people present, including a young lady videotaping the game. This excludes the two Carlynton coaches. Throughout the game, there was foul language from Canevin’s coaches. Towards the end of the game, one of the five people working in the press box made a comment to another worker that Canevin was showing no class, to which one of the Canevin coaches yelled out, “just like your mother.”

Canevin’s football team has 37 players and six coaches. Out of those 43 individuals, only four players live in Crafton or Carnegie.

Recruiting by Canevin has been occurring since Carlynton first opened its doors 50 years ago. As a freshman baseball player for Crafton High School a few months before Carlynton’s opening, it happened with our family. Let’s not forget the sanctions placed on Canevin’s girls’ basketball team recently. Years ago, when Canevin had a pretty good baseball team, three of the players were from Washington, Pa. It is my understanding that not one Canevin boys basketball player lives within four miles of the high school as well.

I guess that Canevin feels that since Seton LaSalle High School is a regular “recruiter,” that it’s ok for them as well.
