They like their community to be spick and span.

More than 100 Hampton residents turned out for the municipality’s annual Clean-Up Day in April, including the young and old, individuals and families.

The crowd gathered at the Hampton Community Center on McCully Road early on a Saturday morning, enjoying doughnuts and beverages while waiting for the event, and their work, to begin.

Assistant municipal manager Susan Bernet welcomed the volunteers and, along with manager Chris Lochner and other township representatives, assigned individuals to different groups.

Residents worked alongside government officials to ensure that Hampton remains the clean and attractive area that it is.

“Hampton Clean-Up Day was a huge success,” former municipal council member Mike Peters said. “Each year, more and more Hampton residents sign up to make an impact in keeping our community clean.”

Dr. Carolynn Johnson, council president, also was ready to lend a hand.

“Clean-Up Day is something that I truly enjoy participating in, and it is such an easy way to have a real, tangible impact on our community,” she said.

The weather cooperated with a sunny and mild day — rare for this spring — allowing the participants to spend an enjoyable morning contributing to the place they call home.

“I was thankful to see that so many of our residents and staff were eager to spend a few hours outside on a lovely Saturday morning to help keep Hampton beautiful, and I want to extend my thanks to everyone who participated,” Johnson said.

By the end of the event, volunteers had gathered more than 600 bags of trash collected throughout the township, ridding the community of countless eyesores while instilling pride among Hampton’s residents.

“Clean-Up Day is a great way to give back to the community,” Peters said. “I have been a residents of the township for over 50 years, and this is a way to help maintain the quality of life in the township.”
