Community Clean-Up Day coming to Hampton
Spring training may not generate a lot of excitement around Pittsburgh anymore, given the sorry state of baseball’s Pirates.
As an alternative, consider channeling that enthusiasm into spring cleaning.
Seriously, inconsiderate types seem to thrive on spending their winters dumping everything from sandwich wrappers to cigarette butts in places that aren’t meant to be trash receptacles.
If you don’t like seeing any of that around Hampton, the township has its annual Community Clean-Up Day scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon, March 25, with participants meeting at the community center for instructions. Municipal officials report that approximately 125 volunteers took part each of the past two years, and they’d like to match that total for 2023.
Along with the satisfaction of sprucing up the township, participants will receive official Clean-Up Day T-shirt as a small token of appreciation for their service. They also will receive cleaning essentials: bags, vests and gloves.
For young people, the event represents an opportunity to bolster community service hours. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by at least one parent or guardian who can drive the participant to a cleanup location. All volunteers and volunteer groups must have drivers.
Registration is necessary for the event at www.hampton-pa.org/FormCenter/General-8/Hampton-LitterCleanUp-Day-Saturday-March-370.
Also with regard to refuse, Hampton officials have noticed an increase in illegal dumping in dumpsters at the municipal building, along roadways and at local businesses, according to the township website, which notes:
• Only the cardboard dumpsters — now located behind the salt storage building at the municipal complex, the former site for the glass recycling bin — are for residents to recycle cardboard.
• During summer, single-stream recycling dumpsters are located in the swimming pool parking lot for residential disposal of approved recyclables including plastics, paper and glass.
• The two trash dumpsters located in front of the salt storage building are specifically for garbage from the municipal complex facilities, not public use. The area is under video surveillance.
Residents who have excess garbage that does not fit in their new trash carts are asked to call Waste Management at 1-800-451-3060 to purchase an additional cart.
