Remake Learning Days is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. May 14 at Hampton High School

The free event offers community members an opportunity to engage in the school district’s teaching and learning experiences

According to Ed McKaveney, the district’s director of technology, Remake Learning Days began several years ago as a regional initiative of the Remake Learning Network in Pittsburgh, and it since has expanded across the United States and internationally.

Although the Hampton event is at the high school as a centralized space, students and educators from throughout the district will participate.

“Our event is unique in that elementary, middle and high school students work alongside teachers and partners to offer a mix of fun hands-on opportunities for participants and visitors of all ages to see career connections, generate ideas and even learn, themselves,” McKaveney said.

The elementary students will share how they apply their knowledge to real-world situations, along with showcasing collaborative coding and robotics activities.

Middle school students will work with teachers to showcase unique language learning activities, STEM learning and critical thinking connected to literature, while also giving the community a chance to experience the Hampton Middle School Reality Fair and its partnership with the Clearview Credit Union.

The high school’s Busy Bean Café and student-run technology help desk will be open, and students will share computer science and Advanced Placement research projects, giving students and visitors the opportunity to see how students build ideas for the future.

“Topping things off, the Hampton Township Police Department will be offering demonstrations of technological advancements they have today, while the Odyssey of the Mind teams will showcase the work they have done in recent competitions,” McKaveney said. “You will even be able to gain some delicious entrepreneurial insight with Bruster’s Ice Cream.”

Many of the projects are funded in part through grants and donations, and the Remake Learning Days event further gives donors like the Hampton Alliance for Educational Excellence the opportunity to highlight and see how their contributions have been used, in a way not possible during a typical school day.
