Supporters wave the Palestine flag at a march in Toronto on Sunday.

More than a dozen organizations have organized a ‘Day of Action for Palestine’ rally this afternoon in Oakland.

The rally is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the intersection of Bigelow Boulevard and Forbes Avenue.

“Israel is currently carrying out a massacre of historic proportions against Gaza and all throughout Palestine, slaughtering hundreds,” organizers wrote in a news release sent out by the Pittsburgh Palestine Coalition.

“People all around the world, including Pittsburgh, are taking to the streets in support of the Palestinian movement,” the organization said in its call for supporters to join today’s rally.

A Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman said no roads will be shut down for the rally.

“Our Traffic Unit officers will be standing by as they are with all planned demonstrations or rallies and have made it a priority to respect demonstrators’ First Amendment rights while also ensuring public safety,” spokeswoman Cara Cruz said.

A spokeswoman for the FBI office in Pittsburgh said the agency is aware of call the for global action.

“FBI Pittsburgh is working closely with our law enforcement partners in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia to share information and identify and disrupt any threats that may emerge,” said spokeswoman Catherine Coennen.

“As always, we take seriously any tips or leads we receive regarding potential threats and investigate them rigorously to determine their credibility,” she said. “The FBI encourages members of the public to remain vigilant and report anything they consider suspicious to law enforcement.”

The protest in Oakland comes nearly a week after Hamas militants conducted a surprise, early morning attack on Israel, firing thousands of rockets into towns near the Gaza Strip.

Militants broke through a fortified border fence and gunned down civilians and soldiers in Israeli communities along the border during a Jewish holiday.

Israel responded by declaring war on Hamas and struck back with a relentless campaign of airstrikes. The army also called up around 300,000 reservists, which is believed to be a a preparation for a ground assault into Gaza.

The war has already claimed more than 2,800 lives on both sides.

Former Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal earlier this week released a video message encouraging the Muslim world to protest on Friday as a show of support for Palestine.

Organizers of Friday’s rally near the Pitt campus said they will call on the U.S. to end all military and economic assistance to Israel, an end to the “siege and genocide on Gaza” and promote “a free Palestine.”

The participating organizations in Friday’s rally in Oakland are:

• Friends of the Sabeel North America.

• Pittsburgh Palestine Solidarity Committee.

• Anti-Zionist Jews of Pittsburgh.

• Council on American-Islamic Relations.

• Party for Socialism and Liberation.

• Act Now to Stop War and End Racism Coalition.

• New Afrikan Independence Party.

• Boycott Divestment Sanctions Pittsburgh.

• Students for Justice in Palestine at Pitt.

• Progressive Students for Change at Pitt.
