The proposed final draft of the North Allegheny’s 2023-24 budget is available for public viewing and feedback, as required by the state.

Total revenue is estimated at $194 million and expenses at $193 million, with no increase in property taxes which are currently set at 19.74 mills.

The preliminary budget unveiled in April had a projected a deficit of $232,71, according to Kermit Houser, assistant director of finance/treasurer. The proposed final budget has a projected surplus of $245,683.

State law requires the district to put the proposed final budget out for public inspection for 20 days before vote. It is sent to each North Allegheny municipality, Northland public library and school buildings where it can be displayed.

Final vote will take place on June 12 with the budget becoming effective July 1, Houser said.

School board Director Michael Weniger said many budget expenditures are contractually mandated. Debt is a “very large number. We have control of not taking more debt” such as beginning large capital projects.

Board President Libby Blackburn said when the district delays renovations “you can really help your budget.” But acknowledged some upgrades can’t be delayed.
