Here are some of the latest news items from this morning, Wednesday, Jan. 28:

Fire crews called twice to Carrick home

After extinguishing flames at a home in Pittsburgh’s Carrick neighborhood early Tuesday morning, fire crews were called back to the scene hours later.

Firefighters were first dispatched to the home along West Cherryhill Street around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

Despite knocking down the flames the first time, crews were called back to the home about four hours later for a rekindle, WTAE said.

There were no reports of injuries from the fire, WTAE reported.

An Allegheny County dispatcher could not confirm the initial time of the fire to TribLive on Tuesday morning. The dispatcher said as of 6:15 a.m. all crews had left the scene.

A message to Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire Chief Darryl Jones seeking additional information was not returned Tuesday morning.

Downtown Pittsburgh arrests

Pittsburgh police released the latest arrest and citation statistics in the city’s Downtown from Jan. 20 through Sunday.

There were five arrests, six non-traffic citations, three parking citations, two tows, six traffic stops and six traffic citations, according to police.

In early July, Pittsburgh police launched a Downtown patrol initiative — including 20 officers and up to an additional 10 K-9, bicycle and violence prevention unit officers — following an uptick in crime in the central business district.

In its first week, the patrol tracked 29 arrests, 36 non-traffic citations, one parking citation and three traffic citations.

Its violence prevention and narcotics units logged an additional five arrests and two non-traffic citations. The patrol’s traffic units doled out 48 parking citations, five traffic citations, eight tows and no arrests.

South Side arrests

Pittsburgh police also released arrest and citation statistics recorded in the city’s South Side neighborhood from Christmas Eve through Sunday.

Across the month-long period, there were 73 traffic stops, two traffic citations, 17 non-traffic citations, 73 arrests and 10 firearms recovered.

Pittsburgh police created a South Side patrol unit in July 2023 to tamp down crime and improve the entertainment district’s reputation.
