The Pittsburgh Promise’s mission to provide scholarships to graduates of Pittsburgh Public Schools to attend post-secondary institutions received a major assist Thursday.

First National Bank Corp. (FNB) announced it is donating $1 million to the Pittsburgh Promise. Five graduating Pittsburgh Public Schools seniors will be chosen each year and named as the “F.N.B. Corporation Scholars of The Pittsburgh Promise.”

Pittsburgh Promise representatives said the FNB Scholars will have the chance to pursue mentoring and professional relationships with company leaders while working toward their post-secondary degrees.

FNB presented the gift at The Pittsburgh Promise’s “Preferred College Partners Opportunity Fair,” where students met with representatives of trade, two-year, and four-year post-secondary schools. The “Preferred College Partners” are post-secondary institutions that commit to providing grants and other support to Promise scholars, officials said.

“Pittsburgh’s economic success depends on our ability to prepare the next generation of our local workforce,” FNB president and CEO Vincent J. Delie said. “Through FNB’s partnership with The Pittsburgh Promise, we can expand opportunities for students to achieve their academic aspirations, thrive in their careers and contribute to our region’s lasting prosperity.”

FNB, headquartered in Pittsburgh, is building the 26-story FNB Financial Center in the Lower Hill District to serve as its new corporate headquarters.

“We are so grateful to have FNB as our newest $1 million partner,” Pittsburgh Promise Executive Director Saleem Ghubril said. “They are a longtime supporter of our mission and our students. Their generous investment demonstrates a deep commitment to our city’s young people, the diversity and strength of our workforce and the vitality of our region.”
