Aspinwall, Blawnox to host Earth Day cleanups

Lower Valley municipalities will mark Earth Day with a slew of cleanup opportunities.
In Blawnox, volunteers can meet at 9 a.m. April 27 at the community park along Center Avenue.
Secretary Kathy Ulanowicz said efforts will focus on sprucing up the park in time for milder temperatures. The park, she said, is a popular gathering place for residents of all ages because of the baseball fields, playground equipment and benches.
“Come one, come all,” she said. “We want to focus on the ballpark because it is such a heavily used area and also help make way for a community garden. We just want to get it ready and spruced up for spring.”
The cleanup will last until noon.
In Aspinwall, the Neighborhood Watch crime prevention group is pairing with the borough’s police department and shade tree commission to host three Earth Day activities on April 27.
Green Streets, the annual spring cleanup, will run from 10 a.m. to noon, along with an event called Mulch Madness in which volunteers focus on manicuring the borough’s tree-lined sidewalks by spreading mulch.
Last year, more than 90 volunteers turned out for the combined event that aims to boost community pride by clearing debris from streets, walkways and parks.
Anyone interested in helping can meet at 10 a.m. near the municipal building at 217 Commercial Ave. Vests and garbage bags will be provided.
Nearby, at the police station, residents can participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event gives people a chance to dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medications. Pills can be dropped off in a plastic bag, but liquids must be in their original containers.
