Aspinwall council beefing up rental inspections

Aspinwall council is expected this week to discuss changes to the borough’s ordinance regarding rental inspections.
Council will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the municipal office at 217 Commercial Avenue.
Manager Melissa Lang said amendments could be made to code enforcement that would require registration and inspection of all residential and non-residential rentals.
“The ordinance update is creating a system to enforce the rental codes already in place,” she said.
“We haven’t had problems, but council feels that it is time to enforce the ordinance and the inspections.”
Specifically, the changes will establish a definition of rental properties and registration requirements that include fees, notifications and yearly registrations.
There will be an appeal process and penalty fee structure set up as well.
Council is expected to discuss the issue again at its Aug. 7 meeting.
Copies of the proposed changes are available for review at the municipal office from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
