Children can learn to act at Aspinwall summer camp

Children can get a taste of the spotlight during a summer theater camp in Aspinwall.
Stage Right Performing Arts & Education will host two sessions, one in June and one in July, for youngsters who would like to try their hand at acting.
It will be hosted amid the scenic backdrop of Aspinwall Riverfront Park.
“Introduction to Theater,” for ages 4 to 6, will run June 17-20.
“Shakespeare in the Park,” for ages 7 to 13, will run eight days, July 15-19 and 22-24.
“We discuss the parts of a stage, audience etiquette, improvisation, costumes and scenery,” said Jenna Hayes, Stage Right vice-president and educational director.
Hayes is a graduate of Duquesne University and has produced several plays at Fox Chapel Area School District. She also conducts a youth vocal ensemble, Giovani Voci.
“Children learn how to become a character,” Hayes said. “The older group last year wrote their own one-act play about time travel. We had student directors and scene changes and completely original dialogue.”
Tuition costs $120 for the four-day session and $200 for the longer program.
Campers will play and perform throughout the park, along the trails and in the playground, Jamie McDonald, director of publicity, said.
Other instructors include:
• Angela Thompson, a Stage Right board member who retired after teaching music for 35 years at Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland. Thompson was an active performer in the Washington, D.C. area.
• Tonya Lynn, who earned her master’s degree in theater from the University of Pittsburgh and has worked as an actor, director and fight choreographer.
• Catherine Gowl, an actor, puppeteer and educator who graduated from Harvard and whose theater credits include a stop at the Benedum with the North American tour of “War Horse.”
• Lexie Hellinger, a sophomore at Seton Hill University. She is a musical theater major who loves to be on stage and share her passion, Hellinger said.
