As July comes to a close, Fox Chapel Area officials are weighing options for a series of orientation sessions to welcome incoming freshmen.

Tours of the high school, along with parent and student orientations, are planned for mid-August but students should prepare to be welcomed remotely depending on covid-19 statistics from Allegheny County and the CDC.

“At this point in time, we are still hoping for in-person orientations for our students,” said Bonnie Berzonski, district coordinator of communications. “However, the district is also planning virtual options.”

As planned, events include:

– Freshman Parent Night, 6 p.m. optional tour and 7 p.m. assembly Aug. 18 in the high school auditorium.

The presentation aims to better help parents understand what to expect over the next four years. The session will include an explanation of school procedures, academics, support services, clubs, activities and athletics.

During the parent meeting, student ambassadors will lead building tours for freshmen who want to get a glimpse of the facility.

– Freshman orientation, noon to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20 in the high school auditorium.

Students will get a first look at their fall class schedule and have a brief walk-through of a typical day. They will be given locker assignments and cafeteria instructions and will have a chance to meet teachers.

Transportation will be offered for this orientation.

Berzonski said families will be notified when the district makes a final decision whether to host the events in-person or online.

She said freshmen will also be able to participate throughout the year in an assembly series that touches on a variety of topics from learning strategies and healthy relationships to mental health awareness and functioning skills.
