The Fox Chapel Area Rotary honored 10 Shady Side Academy seniors for outstanding leadership and academics.

“These are outstanding students who represent the very best the academy has to offer,” said Bob Trimble, club president. “They not only have earned top grades taking difficult subjects but also found time to help their classmates be the best they can be.”

Students were chosen by teachers in various school departments. They were honored during a luncheon May 22 at the Lauri Ann West Community Center in O’Hara.

Each received a small monetary award.

Graduate Sara Laman, who will attend Carnegie Mellon in the fall, won the Rotary’s Service Above Self Award.

Others honored included: Pedro da Silva, who plans to attend the University of Michigan; Hansen (Ethan) Qu, who will attend Boston University, Sorbonne; Harihar Viswanathan, who plans to attend Yale; Abigail Ondos, who will attend Wake Forest; and Anna Brown, who will attend Olin College of Engineering in Massachusetts.

Future plans were not clear for some others that were honored, including Phillip Babuscio, Trinity Brock and Veronica Koval.

With about 100 members, the Fox Chapel Area branch is one of the largest Rotary Clubs in Western Pennsylvania. Members engage in a variety of civic and charitable projects, raising $25,000 through its annual golf outing.
