The Fox Chapel Area High School’s class of 2027 is on a charitable roll.

Students and class leaders hosted a month-long fundraiser for their winter charity outreach supporting Surgicorps International.

The students exceeded their goal of raising $500 and donated $860 last month to the nonprofit dedicated to providing free surgical and medical care to people in need in developing countries.

“The class aimed to fund two cleft lip surgeries and provide gifts for patients, including coloring books and baseball caps,” said Fox Chapel Area High School AP U.S. government and politics, sociology and psychology teacher Jennifer Klein.

In 2024, Surgicorps International marked 30 years of service with more than 100 medical missions in 22 countries, providing care to more than 8,400 patients worldwide.

Students researched the Surgicorps mission, designed the fundraising flyers and posters, presented the fundraiser to the student body and set goals.

Students visited Surgicorps International Headquarters in Shaler on Feb. 28 for an office tour and check presentation.

Other fundraisers this academic year have included making more than 200 Halloween mummy-themed pinatas for the Veterans’ Hospital and local nursing homes, collecting more than 500 books for Reading Ready Pittsburgh and raising money for Backpacks for Hunger.

“The class is supporting individuals of all ages in the community,” Klein said.
