Fox Chapel Area student earns spot at international science fair

Fox Chapel Area’s Sanjay Seshan is among four students chosen to represent the region at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair in Phoenix.
Seshan competed for the honor with more than 1,000 other young scientists at the Carnegie Science Center’s 80th annual Covestro Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
Awards totaling more than $1 million were doled out at an awards ceremony March 30 at Heinz Field.
Seshan’s project was titled “Phase 2: Improving Autonomous Vehicle Performance Using Infrastructure-Based Sensing.” He will travel to Arizona May 12-17 with Rachel Bina of North Allegheny High School, Jakobi Deslouches of Pittsburgh Allderdice and Aria Eppinger of Winchester Thurston.
The elite Intel competition will see 1,800 students vying for scholarships, internships and the grand prize — a trip to the Nobel Prize ceremonies in Stockholm, Sweden.
Among other honors at the Covestro fair were category awards including first-place prizes in the following fields:
• Earth/Space/Environments: Arvind Seshan of Dorseyville Middle School.
• Behavioral and Social Science: Rajeev Godse of Fox Chapel Area High School.
Seshan is no stranger to being recognized for his scientific endeavors.
In 2017, he was chosen as a finalist for the Broadcom MASTERS awards for his work in detecting deteriorating water systems in the United States.
Seshan was one of 30 students from across the country to be named a finalist in the competition.
Produced by the Society for Science and the Public, MASTERS is an acronym for math, applied science, technology and engineering rising stars.
