Residents are encouraged to “Fill a Truck” at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church on Feb. 3 with peanut butter, paper towels and other non-perishable items.
The church’s annual food drive will see a 10-foot box truck parked in the lot along Field Club Road waiting for donations.
“It’s so amazing to see not just our church but the surrounding community members come together to fill that truck with food, paper products and even cleaning supplies,” Associate Pastor Ellen Dawson said.
“It’s our church’s hope that others can experience the joy we see as people drop off donations and our members sort them, box them up and fill the truck.”
The fundraiser benefits three local food pantries including Bread of Life in Etna, St. Vincent de Paul in Sharpsburg and Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center in Indiana Township.
Dawson said the church has an ongoing relationship with the pantries and leaders have expressed a particular need after the holidays and through the winter months.
“We pray that joy will be passed on to the people who receive these donations from the pantries,” she said.
Deacon Cate Mettenburg said there typically is a positive response from the larger community, with neighbors coming from across the Fox Chapel Area School District to contribute.
People can donate canned goods and paper products from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Suggested items include cereal, boxed meals, stuffing, sauce, canned potatoes, peanut butter, spaghetti, canned chili, juice, condiments, coffee and toilet paper. People can donate before the event by dropping off items in plastic collection bins at the church. The event is sponsored by the board of deacons.
Volunteers of all ages are needed to help sort and pack the boxes.
