Fox Chapel logo, street signs to remain as is

Fox Chapel officials said they have no plans to change the borough logo seen hanging on the wall in council chambers.

Fox Chapel officials have decided not to move forward with a new borough logo or revamped street signs.

Resident and graphic designer Bill Kolando approached council at its April 18 meeting about changing its logo.

The current image features two large trees on the left, a smaller one to the right of a chapel, and a fox just left of center appearing to walk toward the chapel.

It’s all drawn in dark green with a frame around it with the words “Borough of Fox Chapel” either directly underneath or to its right, depending on where it is being used.

One of Kolando’s proposed alternatives depicted the fox drawn in red, a tree to the right in light green, and a chapel to the left in a slight gray tone. A trail zig-zags its way in through the middle and around the tree.

The second option had the tree to the left, the chapel in the center, and the trail leading to the fox at the bottom, facing right. It was all in green except for the word “Borough,” which was in gray.

Kolano also shared images of street signs with the new logo on top, a thin orange line in the middle of the sign, and the street name at the bottom.

Council members at Monday night’s meeting said they received feedback from multiple residents, some of which contacted the borough office.

“People felt very strongly this should not be changed,” Councilwoman Sarah Hanna said.

Councilman Bradley Harrison said his constituents liked the current street signs, but didn’t feel as strongly about borough letterhead.

“If it’s a website or a newsletter, updating the logo a little bit seems OK,” Harrison said. “A lot of people also thought it was kind of odd that just one random vendor came and made a presentation. We don’t really do that for other areas like (paving). That was kind of a procedural oddity to a lot of people.”

Kolano at the time of his presentation said that he did all the work for free and was just a concerned citizen looking to make an impact on his town.

No action was taken on the proposed logos at the April session and Kolano was not at Tuesday night’s meeting.

Council president Andrew Bennett thanked Kolano for his efforts sparking a conversation.

“I think he fostered a conversation, and I think a lot of us found out the residents really like what we have,” Bennett said. “It’s nice people feel attached to it.”

The president said he heard comments about “cleaning up” the fox to make it look more like a fox and less like a raccoon.

No new images were presented at the meeting.

Borough officials said they are still trying to track down the history of the logo.
