Blawnox residents are encouraged to join a “growing-the-garden” event on Saturday.

The initiative hosted by I Heart Blawnox will see residents come together to build the raised beds for a long-awaited public garden at Blawnox Community Park along Center Avenue.

“We are so excited to get started,” volunteer Dodi Dean said. “We will be building the foundation for the growing to happen.”

The event will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A garden has been sought for several years, with volunteers from the I Heart Blawnox religious outreach searching for a proper venue.

Together, with council, they agreed that the busy park near the Blawnox Hi-Rise will be a fitting spot.

Volunteers on Saturday should bring tools if they have them. Activities will include building the garden beds, hauling dirt and planting crops.

The borough previously hosted a park clean-up to clear an area for the garden.

The 2019 season is expected to include vegetables and flowers. Maintenance will be volunteer-based, including weeding, pruning, harvesting and watering.

As proposed, tomatoes, peppers and herbs will sprout in the far corner of the fenced park, which is locked each night.

Officials are hoping that residents of the hi-rise will be encouraged to visit the garden since it sits so close to the apartment building.
